This post will showcase my best storm cell photos taken with my iPhone 4. I love taking pictures of storms, although I’ve never gone out of my way to ‘chase’ them – I’ve been fortunate enough to be in the right spot at the right time, and with the iPhone a camera is always at hand.
The cameras on the phones are getting pretty good these days, as these images show. Three of the images are panoramas, and one of them is a single image. Click each image for a larger version.
1. Storm Cell Over Sydney
This storm cell was captured on the 30th March 2011 up at Presidents Hill lookout at Gosford, overlooking Brisbane Water towards Sydney.
The sky was incredibly dark out West as the storm was coming in. I made it home just in time – literally as the first drops started hitting the ground. It was a warm day, and the temperature dropped 10-15 degrees as the storm swept through, with gusty winds and teaming rain – however it was all over very quickly. 10 minutes later, it was gone.
2. Storm Cell at Umina Beach
This storm cell was captured on the 11th February 2011 at Umina Beach.
Eliza and I had travelled out to Umina to deliver a garden shed that we had sold on ebay. As we started driving back, we saw this cell forming over the beach, so we quickly detoured to Umina Beach and captured this 4 image panorama.
Unfortunately the storm itself was a fizzer and didn’t really do anything exciting – but it looked great 🙂
3. Storm Cell Over Brisbane Water
This storm cell was captured on the 16th August 2010 at Koolewong, looking over Brisbane Water towards the North East.
The family and I were on a bike ride on the path from Gosford to Woy Woy along the water front when this storm was building up in the North, heading in our direction. We rode more quickly and made it to Woy Woy just before the storm hit.
We sat it out in the Fish and Chip shop before riding home when it was all over 🙂
4. Storm Cell Over Sydney
This storm cell is the same as #1, captured on the 30th March 2011. It’s a different view of the same storm, a 3 image vertical panorama.
5. Bonus – Massive Storm Approaching Birubi Beach
As a bonus, I wanted to share one of my favourite storm cell photos – this one wasn’t taken with the iPhone, but was taken with my digital SLR up at Birubi Beach, December 2008. It’s a 3 image panorama, with each frame being a 3-image HDR.
Click on the image to read more about the image and see other images of that storm.
The images were taken as “HDR” in the iPhone as single images, with overlapping images for the panorama. The panoramas were assembled using the Autostitch iPhone app, and the final images were further processed in Photoshop to reduce noise and add some contrast and sharpening.

Thanks for looking.
