Graded to 2nd Dan – A New Journey and Some New Goals

Completely unrelated to photography, but I know there were some people who followed my blog for my Karate journey, so I thought it was time for a bit of an update there, as well as letting those interested know about a new journey and some new goals I’ve set myself in my personal fitness life.

It’s been a month now, but I successfully graded for my 2nd Dan Black Belt at BBMA on the 21st/22nd June. It was another incredible and amazing experience – something I’ll remember forever.

The 5km running challenge

After almost 24 hours of constant training, it was both mentally and physically demanding and draining; the last 6 hours you just get by on adrenalin alone. But the reward at the end, the high, the feeling of pride of accomplishment at achieving the goal, makes it all worthwhile.

Having achieved that goal of reaching 2nd Dan in Karate, I decided it was time for me to set myself some new goals. I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m going to take a break from Karate for a while and try some CrossFit. I just don’t have enough free time in my week to do two sports, so I’m going to try CrossFit for a while and see how I go.

I don’t know if I’ll love it or hate it, but I’m going to give it a shot – to get fitter, to increase strength and stamina.

What’s CrossFit? Here’s are a couple of videos I found online that describes it, but there’s heaps more.

It’s functional movements, constantly varied, done with high intensity. It should be fun and a new challenge.

I’ll try and still get to the occasional Karate class when and where I can, some sparring sessions, and hopefully the intramural tournament and gradings too.

But the good thing is, Karate will never leave me.

The last 7.5 years have been the most amazing journey I’ve had. I’ve loved every second of it – for what it’s done for me in terms of skill and confidence, what it’s taught me about myself, what it means for me to set and achieve personal goals on a regular basis, and of course for who it’s introduced me too – some amazing people who I call close friends, as well as incredible instructors and teachers who inspire and motivate me every day.

I look forward to continuing to follow the journey of my BBMA friends and hope we can still keep in touch regularly! The BBMA journey has made me a better person and that’s thanks to a fantastic organisation with great instructors. If you live on the Central Coast or Hornsby, and want to do something amazing for your life, start Karate at BBMA.

Thanks for following my journey! A new chapter to come.
