Sunrise Rays Water Rush

Planet Conjunction Rising at Terrigal on May 15th, 2011

On the morning of the 15th May, I headed out to Terrigal and setup next to the Skillion to capture the stunning conjunction of Venus, Mercury, Mars and Jupiter. I was treated to a beautiful scene of crepuscular rays and managed to capture my favourite shot as I was knee deep in water after a large wave rushed in.

Planetary Conjunction Shuts Down the Sydney Harbour Bridge in May 2011

On May 13th 2011, the closest alignment of the conjunction of Venus, Mercury, Mars and Jupiter got lots of media attention. I was even interviewed for the local paper! But noone expected the beautiful alignment of planets in the sky on that Friday morning to close down the Harbour Bridge for over 2 hours! But that’s what happened!

Planetary Reflections at Bateau Bay Beach

Bateau Bay Beach and Planetary Conjunction in May 2011

As the May 2011 Conjunction of the Planets rolled on, the planets were getting closer together culminating in their closest approach on the 12th and 13th of May.

These images were captured on the 12th May at Bateau Bay Beach, a place I had scoped out earlier while doing some wedding shoot preparation for Kristy and Matt’s wedding.

Sydney Opera House and Planetary Conjunction

Sydney Opera House and Planetary Conjunction at Dawn

In the early morning of the 5th May 2011, I lugged my camera gear to work to photograph a unique planetary conjunction in the pre-dawn sky over the Sydney Opera House. The conjunction of Jupiter, Venus, Mars and Mercury in the pre-dawn sky was taking place all throughout the month of May, and I had [...]

Four Planet Conjunction, August 2010

Four Planets and Moon Conjunction, from 7th and 13th August 2010 at The Entrance

Hi all, These photos are of a different four-planet conjunction back in August 2010. I found them while organising my photos and realised I hadn’t posted them here on my blog. The first set was taken on the 7th August at The Entrance, NSW. It was the preparation shoot for the week after, when the Crescent [...]

Well it's not pretty, but it's Mars!

Well this has been a long time coming… It’s been over 4 months since my last planetary image! A combination of bad weather, bad seeing and very low motivation for astrophotography (mainly the latter) has meant I just didn’t have my telescope out for literally 4+ months. I’m trying to force myself back into it, [...]

Mr First Mars for 2009 – at a tiny 4.9 arcseconds

On Tuesday morning, 23rd June 2009 I captured my first image of Mars for 2009. It’s still very early in the season, with Mars still 288 million kilometres away, subtending a tiny diameter of a 4.9″ on the sky. Mars doesn’t reach opposition until late January, 2010 when it will be 14 arcseconds in diameter – [...]

Mars will NOT be as Big as the Full Moon on August 27th!

It’s that time of year again, when the emails and powerpoint presentations start going around about Mars being as big or as bright as the Full Moon on August 27th. I’ve received several emails from people asking about it in the last couple of weeks. It’s a hoax and email spam. You can safely ignore [...]

Photos of the Moon, Jupiter, Mercury & Mars Conjunction

I just love Moon and Planet conjunctions, and I just love early morning photography. When the two combine that’s when I hope to create something special. On the morning of the 23rd February, a beautiful conjunction rose in the pre-dawn sky. The Crescent Moon with earthshine on display shone brilliantly in the East as it was [...]

Jupiter Back in our Morning Sky for Season 2009

Jupiter is my favourite planet to take photos of, so it’s getting to the exciting time of the year now when Jupiter is gracing our morning skies again and will soon be high enough to point my telescope at and start capturing images. It’s currently at about 10° altitude at approx 6am from mid-southern latitudes, [...]
