I finally got around to finishing some more pictures from our Birubi Beach christmas holidays! (Yes, it’s been that long!)
In this set, I feature some beautiful sunset photos taken on December 30th, 2008. Living on the East coast, I never get to see the Sun setting over the ocean. But due to the curving around of the headland, at Birubi Beach in summer it is possible!
Jacob and I went down to the beach to watch and photograph the Sunset – him with my old Sony Cybershot, and me with my Canon 350D. It was great spending the time together, wandering the coastline and climbing over the rocks, looking for the perfect shot.

The sand dunes at Birubi Beach are just stunning. With the right light it’s almost impossible to take a bad photo of these wonderful objects of nature. And so it was in December 2008 when the sunset painted just the right light on the wind-swept ripples in the sand, creating a wonderful scene to capture.

Dusk at Birubi Beach
These photos were taken during my family’s christmas holidays at the end of 2008. I’m glad I finally found the time to finish processing these – it reminded me of what a beautiful location it was.
The photo above is available for purchase at RedBubble, and for download as a wallpaper (1024×768). Please let me know if you would like other sizes made available.
Please continue reading to see the rest of the photos from the impromptu sunset shoot.

In the From the Vault series, I feature an older image which hasn’t been seen here before and I talk about the capture and processing and hopefully highlight why this image is special to me.
The feature image in From the Vault this week is titled Long Jetty Sunset and has long been one of my favourite sunset images. You know those days when you’re out to photograph a sunrise or a sunset, and the clouds are just right.. the water is just right.. the reflections are just right, and everything is how you imagined it would be.

Long Jetty Sunset
The old crusty boat filled with seaweed, the family walking along the wharf, the lovely golden reflections off the hand rail and the beautiful sunset colours and clouds reflecting off the water really make this image stand out to me.
Please read on to learn more about this image and to see more photos from the session.

On the night of the Smiley Face Conjunction, before the sun set and the conjunction was visible, I was able to capture some dramatic sunset scenes over Brisbane Water, from Yattalunga and Green Point on the Central Coast of NSW.
I captured and processed these using HDR techniques – a way of representing a greater dynamic range in a single photo by using multiple exposures of the same scene (under exposed, correct exposure, over exposed).
It’s a fairly new technique for me and not everyone is a fan of the type of images it can produce – sometimes producing unrealistic fairytale type images, or with halo artefacts, depending on the extent of the processing.
Please check out the rest of the photos and I’d love to hear what you think. I need more practise in both capturing and processing HDR images like these, so bare with me
