Apologies for the lack of updates recently – it’s been a pretty crazy week at work. It started with the horrible news that half of my team are to be made redundant, which took place last Tuesday, and ended with a work conference and christmas party on Friday.
Read on to read more and to see more pictures from the xmas party!
Even though I knew about the redundancies for a week or two beforehand, it didn’t make it any easier on the day. It’s never easy seeing people go through that. As much as the before-xmas timing seems even worse, I guess it’s better to be over and done with before christmas. Imagine if the people spent 2-3 weeks on annual leave only to come back and then be made redundant – that would be worse. They could’ve spent that 2-3 weeks looking for a job and have that pay up their sleeve.
I’ve been made redundant once before, about 6 years ago now. It was ok at the time though – apart from having to take a huge pay cut. This was just after the tech bust in the early 00’s and wages had dropped significantly. But I was ready to leave the place I was at and was already looking for work – so the redundancy payout was a welcome cash injection (I’d been there for 3 years).
The worst part about losing half my team, was that it included two of my best friends at work, who were also two of the best developers. A double blow. I wish Christian and Michael the best of luck finding a new job.
On Thursday afternoon I flew down to Melbourne for the REA Group Conference, which took place all day on Friday. Aside from the usual presentations by the CEO and heads of various business departments, it included an excellent motivation talk on Innovation by Jason from Minds at Work. A thoroughly enjoyable talk, and he had the whole room in his hands.
Friday night concluded with the gala dinner, held at the Plaza Ballroom. It had a Brazillian theme, with half-naked Brazillian dancers and entertainers, as well as some Capoerra Dancers. They were brilliant!
Some pics are below – they’re taken with a point and shoot Canon in low light situations, so you’ll have to excuse the quality.
A few amber ales certainly helped forget the dramas of earlier in the week – at least for a few hours. It was a great christmas party – thanks REA!
The rest of my photos from the night can be found in my “REA Group Conference, Xmas 2008” Facebook Album.
